Topic: Leaving and Cleaving [Saturday March 28, 2015]

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”- Genesis 2:24

Majority of challenges in the home can be linked directly or indirectly to the issue of individuals not completely leaving their parents and cleaving to their spouses. In the midst of disagreements, many say things like “my mother or father said we should always do it this way”. I have even heard stories of how families dictate who should sleep where, what to eat and how things should be bought in the house.

The Bible makes very clear that couples should detach from their relatives or parents (to the needed extent), so as to effectively brace up to the responsibility of building their own homes. This is not to say that you cannot go for clarifications, little advice here and there: but these relatives should in no way, be the sole managers of your family.

After marriage, you don’t have to accept every counsel, suggestion and instruction from parents and relatives, even if they may mean well. All must be carefully weighed under the light of the Word and in the interest of your own home. Cases where they are contrary to God’s Word, they should be strictly discarded.

There is no way to enjoy fulfilment and peace in marriage without first leaving, and then cleaving to your spouse. You must be able to trust the ability of the two of you to bring your family up to God’s standard. You must have learnt, and are still learning, how to nurture a successful family; and so in marriage, you must put your knowledge to work.

The extent to which a couple is joined together will be determined by how much they have been able to detach from outside family influences. When you cleave together, drawing your inspiration from God and His Word, then you will fulfill the scripture that says a threefold cord cannot be easily broken. You will not miss it in Jesus’ name!

Remain Blessed!
