BIBLE PASSAGE: Psalms 37:7-9 KJV (RCCG Sunday School STUDENT Manual 3 November 2019)

7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

Patience is the ability to endure difficult circumstances, perseverance in the face of delay, tolerance of provocation without responding in annoyance/anger, enduring trails at expectantly waiting for a promise to be fulfilled (Heb. 10:36). Other words for patience are forbearance, endurance, longsuffering, perseverance, etc. The Bible exhorts believers to run the Christian race with patience (Heb. 12:1) because it is an important virtue (2 Peter 1:5-8) and a component of the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23).

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. PATIENCE AS A VIRTUE
  2. BENEFITS OF PATIENCE

1. PATIENCE AS A VIRTUE

The Bible teaches us that patience produces perseverance and character (James 1:2-4). We need patience when waiting on answers to come, when bedding deliverance, while waiting to be healed, etc. (Ps. 27:14; Exo. 14:14). The true test of patience comes when pur rights are violated or treated unfairly (Heb. 12:2-3). Patience reveals our faith is God’s timing, omnipotence and love (Job 14:14; Ps. 27:14). Patience does not develop overnight. God’s power and good ness are crucial to the development of patience (Col. 1:11). Our Patience is further developed and strengthened by resting in God’s perfect will and timing, even in the face of evil men who ‘succeed in their ways when they carry out their wicked schemes’ (Ps. 37:7)

We see in the Bible many examples of those whose patience characterised their walk with God. James points us to the prophets “as an example of patience in the face of suffering” (James 5:10). He also refers to Job, whose perseverance was rewarded by what the “Lord finally brought about” (James 5:11). Abraham, too, waited patiently and “received what was promised” (Heb. 6:15). Jesus is our model in all things and he demonstrated patient endurance.

2. BENEFITS OF PATIENCE

Patience strengthens and enables us to be more Christ like (Heb. 12:1-2; Ps. 27:14). Our patience is rewarded in the end because the Lord’s coming is near (James 5:7-8; Lam. 3:25).

To display the patience that is characteristic of Christ, we need to first be thankful to God regardless of the situation (Phil. 4:4; 1 Thess 5:18). Secondly, we should seek His purposes and remember His promises of wellness (Rom. 8:28;Heb. 10:23). Above all, we should totally depend on God (Rom. 15:5; Col. 1:9-11) through the manifestation of the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23).

CONCLUSION: The Christian race requires patience. The purpose is for our faith in Christ to be perfected and entire (James 1:2-4).
