Text: Luke 7:1-10 (KJV)

1 Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.

2 And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:

5 For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

9 When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

Key Verse: “When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel” (Luke 7:9).

Faith in God makes great optimists. Over in Burma, a story in the Presbyterian Advance stated that Dr. Judson, a missionary, was lying in a foul jail with 32 lbs. of chains on his ankles, his feet bound to a bamboo pole. A fellow prisoner said, “Dr. Judson, what about the prospect of the conversion of the heathen?”, with a sneer on his face. His instant reply was, “The prospects are just as bright as the promises of God.”

The faith of the centurion in the text was described as a ‘great faith’. Jesus applauded this kind of faith because He had not seen this kind in Israel. There are several components of the centurion’s faith that made it such a marvel. First, he obviously had not been a regular worshiper at the synagogues of the Jews, though he built one to show his kindness and ease relations with the Jews. But he was a Roman soldier and did not know too much of Scriptures. Secondly, he believed Jesus could say the words and his servant could be healed, even if Jesus said it from a distance. Lastly, he rested his mind on Christ’s healing ability without any worry or anxiety. Eventually, the servant received divine healing.

From this incident, we conclude that your faith is about how much trust and confidence you have in God’s words you have heard and believed. The paradox of unbelief and fear in Pentecostal circles today, despite all the sermons, is clearly worrisome. Worry and anxiety has pushed many believers to remote mountains for prayers, backed up with dry fasting without a strand of faith in it. Simply, we are not putting our faith to work as much as we should. If we believe God’s word as much as this centurion, our faith can move mountains.

Thought For The Day: Faith is the essential tool for unlocking God’s wonders.
