Topic: Target the Root [Open Heavens for Teens 19 May 2019]

Memorise: “For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,” – Job 14:7

Read: Mark 7:14-15, 21-23

14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Bible In One Year: 2 Kings 23-25, John 7:1-31

MESSAGE:

To effectively deal with a problem, wisdom demands that you take it from its roots. A tree that is cut down can still grow; with time, it will spring up again. The only time you are assured of total victory is when the enemy is uprooted. It is not enough for Goliath to fall, he can rise again after recovering strength. Until his head is cut off, there should be no celebration.

There are some problems that should not be taken at face value. Think deep and hard before you take any action against them.

There are some problems that could exist in the life of a fellow as a result of secret sin. For instance, if as a teenager, you have problem with sex, you find it hard to say no to sexual advances, even when you know you will regret it afterwards. The root you need to pull out might be pornographic movies or pictures and bad friends. Until you deal with this, you will find it difficult to be totally free from the sin of fornication.

Prayer Point:
Lord, please remove every root of sin in my life.

Hymn 6:

  1. Our God, our help in ages past,
    Our hope for years to come,
    Our shelter from the stormy blast,
    And our eternal home:
  2. Under the shadow of your throne
    Your saints have dwelt secure;
    Sufficient is your arm alone,
    And our defense is sure
  3. Before the hills in order stood
    Or earth received its frame,
    From everlasting you are God,
    To endless years the same.
  4. A thousand ages in your sight
    Are like an evening gone
    Short as the watch that ends the night
    Before the rising sun.
  5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
    Soon bears us all away;
    We fly forgotten, as a dream
    Does at the opening day.
  6. Our God, our help in ages past,
    Our hope for years to come,
    Still be our guard while troubles last,
    And our eternal home!
