TOPIC: You Can Withstand Destructive Forces

BIBLE TEXT: “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.” – Ephesians 4:14

One of the most powerful forces of nature is wind. In the scripture, wind is used as a metaphor for so many things. There are winds of testing, winds of trouble, winds of conflict, of trial and of temptation to mention just a few. Wind as a force is not just powerful but equally destructive. It has the capacity to destroy anything that crosses its path.

However, as strong, powerful and destructive as wind might be, God has given His children the ability to withstand it when it blows and rages in our direction.

In Ephesians 6:13, believers are encouraged to “Take up the whole armor of God” and the simple reason for this is that believers might possess the ability to withstand the winds of life. The word ‘withstand’ means “to remain undamaged by a destructive force.”

According to Rick Warren, one of the best ways to remain undamaged by the winds of life is to stay connected to one’s spiritual family. God never meant for anyone to withstand difficult days alone. According to Genesis 2:18, it was never the intention of God for man to be alone. To Him, loneliness is never a good thing. This is not restricted only to the marriage relationship, as it is mostly interpreted, it extends to forming relationships with other believers. Whether or not you ever marry is irrelevant. You need a spiritual family for support so you can stay connected when hard winds blow in.

One of the main reasons why Jesus established the church was to be a family of support. Ephesians 4:11-14 teaches that God’s church is God’s tool for building His people up and giving them a better life. He has given to certain people some gifts not necessarily for their personal benefit but for the benefit of others in the church. This implies that the church should be a pillar of support for its members in windy situations and circumstances. This support could come in form of counseling, encouragement, and fervent prayers. It could even extend to supporting the victim financially. This is part of the purpose of the church.

Beloved of God, how unfortunate it is that many people have detached themselves from associating with the church as a spiritual family! They run the race of life and of faith independently believing that they don’t need anybody’s help and assistance. This is practically dangerous. According to Kyle Froman, solo racers don’t win races. To go solo is to get carried away by the winds of life and get drowned in the ocean of calamity. If you must withstand the winds of life, you must stay connected to the truth and to your church family.
